Industry Challenge: Made in Space

Establish a business model that utilizes 3D printing on the International Space Station

Description

In-space manufacturing services will change nearly every aspect of how we live and work in space. In 2015 Venture Capitalists invested more in space startups than in the previous 15 years combined. With the first commercially available 3D printer on the International Space Station (ISS) coming on-line in 2016, how can access to this new manufacturing technology and increased private capital be leveraged to improve current ISS processes or procedures.

Establish a business model that utilizes 3D printing on ISS. Assume operating costs for the printer are $15,000 for a single 10 cm X 10 cm X 14 cm volume of ABS, HDPE, or PEI-PC material.
