FAQ

What exactly is a space startup?
We consider a space startup as an entrepreneurial activity in the pre/early-growth stages that aim to, or currently, 1) provide goods or services to the space sector, or 2) create a downstream application that predominantly uses data generated by space assets and targets markets outside of the space sector.

How is the Disrupt Space summit different from NASA Space Apps Challenge or an online challenge platform such as Innocentive?
The challenges presented during the Disrupt Space summit are selected from key international space and non-space organizations. The summit will act as a kickoff platform for new projects with a direct path to market and funding - two key aspects that startups require to succeed.

I already have a team and we already have a startup that fit one of the challenges, can me and my team participate as aspiring entrepreneurs?
If you already have a team and working on a challenging space startup project, then we consider you an early stage space startup! Apply as a team and get a chance to come for free, compete to pitch your startup and win prizes.

Are there discounts for students?
Yes! Look on Eventbrite for a student discount code. You will need to show a valid student identification card when you arrive at the venue.

Who will own the intellectual property coming out of the summit and will Disrupt Space take an equity stake in the startups that are expected to form?
All intellectual property and equity are kept by the founding teams! Our goal is to enable independent startups to provide direct value to the organizations facing a challenge. Disrupt Space’s role is to act as intermediary between the founding teams and the organization.

But I am not a space engineer or scientist, how can I contribute?
Innovation is not possible without outside perspectives. Success in the space sector hinges on the input from all disciplines. If you are an artist, marketer, planner, programmer, lawyer, economist or educator, you too have a role in the summit.

Is there an age limit to enter the event?
We value talent over age. If you are inquisitive, have a hunger for making an impact and wouldn't mind putting some work into it, you too are welcome to join the summit.

It sounds great! Why haven’t I heard about this before?
The Disrupt Space summit is the first of its kind. We see immense potential of using space to solve critical problems on Earth. We want to enable the broader public to see this potential too, and to bring in some new faces to the sector. We successfully organized StartupWeekend Space Bremen and Shanghai simultaneously last year. Check out the summary video here!

FAQ

I am the sole founder for the startup project I am working on, am I allowed to apply?
We recognize that a sole founder will have a very high mountain to climb before seeing success. However, we know there are exceptional people out there and we would like you to prove that to us by submitting an application! Even if you are not successful, we will do our best to give you concise constructive feedback.

What exactly is a startup and what is considered space?
We consider a space startup as an entrepreneurial activity in the pre/early-growth stage of the business lifecycle that aim to, or currently, 1) provide goods or services to the space sector, or 2) create a downstream application that predominantly uses data generated by space assets and targets markets outside of the space sector.

We consider the pre-growth stage as individuals or teams that:

  • have committed their own resources to an entrepreneurial project or entity. (e.g. own funds) or have acquired first external resources for the entrepreneurial project or entity (e.g. seed funding).
  • must have been operating the project or entity for less than 3 years.
